Welcome to Regions of the World, a CFR Education resource exploring the major trends and stories shaping the world today.

This resource is divided into Learning Journeys, each centered around a different geographical region. These will cover the crucial events, relationships, and trends that shape each region. Through these resources, you will gain a better understanding of some of the defining features of each region, and how they shape events across the globe.

Sub-Saharan Africa

This Learning Journey covers sub-Saharan Africa, a region that encompasses more than forty countries spanning from Sudan to South Africa.

With the youngest population in the world, sub-Saharan Africa is a fast-growing and dynamic region. Rich in resources, the region witnessed both flourishing early empires and devastating exploitation at the hands of colonial powers. Yet despite those colonial legacies, sub-Saharan Africa’s modern history has also been a story of resistance and region-wide independence movements.

Today, the region faces many challenges related to its history and dynamism. Old leadership continues to hold onto political power in many countries, often maintaining their place through corruption. Meanwhile, ethnic divisions and resource struggles drive violent conflicts, and new challenges like climate change threaten the region.

But as people demand new leadership, ruling parties are now feeling increased pressure from young voters. At the same time, economic challenges are leading many to push for new reforms and more democratic policies. With large economic growth potential and an expanding urban population, sub-Saharan Africa’s pace of development will likely accelerate in the coming years.

Continue through this learning journey to further explore this large and rapidly-changing region.
