Homework

  • Assign students to browse Regions of the World: Sub-Saharan Africa. Ask them to look out for examples of challenges faced by countries in this region, as well as noting any other major trends they see.

Class

  • (5 minutes) Homework review: ask students to share some of the challenges they identified, as well as other reactions to the reading.
  • (25 minutes) Divide students into groups of 4. Using the attached handout, assign each student one of the challenges listed, such that each group covers all four challenges. Have students mine the reading for evidence supporting their challenge as the greatest one facing the region. Ask students to compare notes with their groupmates after they have finished.
  • (15 minutes) Have students choose one of the four challenges and draft a topic sentence that argues that that is the most significant challenge facing the region. Then, working in their groups, have students peer edit their topic sentences.

Homework

  • Have students write a paragraph supporting the topic sentence they wrote in class.
